North Caucasus by Mr. Vincent WONG
The North Caucasus or Ciscaucasia is a region in Europe governed by Russia. It constitutes the northern part of the wider Caucasus region which forms the natural border between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by the Sea of Azov and Black Sea to the west, the Caspian Sea to the east, and the Great Caucasus Mountains to the south. The region also shares borders with the South Caucasus countries of Georgia and Azerbaijan. Administratively, it is largely composed of six Republics grouped under the North Caucasus Federal District, namely Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia as well as the Russian Border province of Stavropol Krai and Krasnodar Krai. A number of these republics, particularly Chechnya, had suffered tremendously due to military conflicts with Russia. With relative peace somehow returned, large-scale rebuilding is in progress. The region is famous for its natural scenery including snow-capped mountains, glaciers, deep gorges, waterfalls and thermal springs. There are also many colorful ethnic groups such as the Cossacks as well as beautiful monasteries and mosques, which are most interesting to visit.
