Nostalgic Tunisia by Mr. Vincent WONG
Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is the northern most country in Africa and the smallest of the Maghreb countries in North Africa which also include other Muslim countries of Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Western Sahara. The area was settled by the Berbers around 5,000 years ago. Tunisia as a country began as a city state called Carthage, established in the 9th century by the seafaring Phoenicians from the Levant. Very successful in trade, it then evolved into a highly powerful empire with colonies established in many parts of the Mediterranean Sea. By 218 BC, their leader Hannibal even attacked Rome by crossing the Alps into the Italian homeland! After being defeated by the Romans, the country was subsequently conquered by the Vandals, the Byzantium, the Arabs, Norman Italians, the Ahmohad, the Hafsids, the Ottoman, the Italians and the French each leaving behind very different footprints. The country finally obtained its independence in 1951. Nowadays, some 8 milion tourists a year visited Tunisia, attracted by its large number of historical sites, beautiful beaches and picturesque desert landscape.
