Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series - ETHIOPIA by Mr. Vincent WONG

Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series

Traveling to world’s ancient countries through talks and rich collections of pictures

ETHIOPIA by Mr. Vincent WONG

Formerly known as Abyssinia and being called the "Roof of Africa", Ethiopia is the 10th largest country in the continent which is entirely landlocked. Split by the Great Rift Valley, it has a very rugged landscape which is full of amazing and photogenic geological features such as colourful brine springs, yellow sulphur fields, sparkling salt beds, active volcanos, lava lakes and rift valley lakes. With fossil records dating back more than 6 million years, Ethiopia is accepted by many paleoanthropologists as the place of origin of the human species. Today it is still populated by many colourful ethnic groups. As one of the oldest civilization in Africa and home to one of the earliest strands of Christianity, the country is accredited with nine UNESCO Heritage Sites.  These include many interesting historical relics from stelae, tombs, to castles and rock-cut churches. Ethiopia also has a large variety of plant and animal species including 280 mammals (12 are endemic), 860 birds (18 and endemic) and more than 700 plants (12% are indigenous).

Testimonials from participants of previous travel talks and study tours led by Vincent:

“I have learnt a lot on this subject!”

“Very comprehensive indeed. Thanks!”

“Very useful guide for my future trip!”

”Now what I have seen makes much more sense. Thank you!”
