Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series- CUBA by Mr. Vincent WONG

Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series

Traveling to world’s ancient countries through talks and rich collections of pictures

CUBAby Mr. Vincent WONG

Cuba is a small country with a very dynamic history that affected the World. Columbus landed on the Island in 1492, thinking that it was Indian, thus calling the natives Indians. The name stuck. Thereafter, Cuba became the base for the Spanish conquistadores to invade the Americas, causing the demise of the Mesoamerican Civilizations. The introduction of slaves from Africa and later China to work in the sugar and tobacco plantations by the Spanish colonizers was a very sad story which only ended in 1882. Then the United States occupied the country after winning the Spanish-American War of 1898, and they were just as scrupulous in exploiting the Island's resources and controlled the country's economy even after Cuba gained independence in 1902. Cuba's dictator Batista was overthrown by Fidel Castro's Revolution in 1959. The new Government was in serious conflict with the US and reached its climax in 1962 in the Cuban Missile Crisis that almost triggered a nuclear war between USA and Russia, which could wipe out the whole world. To visitors, Cuba is a very beautiful country with warm and friendly people and a melting-pot culture, not to mention its ubiquitous cigar and rum, which are famous around the world.

“Very useful guide for my future trip!”

”Now what I have seen makes much more sense. Thank you!”
