Popular Science Talk Series MOLLUSKS by Mr. Vincent WONG

Popular Science Talk Series

MOLLUSKS by Mr. Vincent WONG

Mollusks are familiar, mysterious as well as beautiful. They are the second largest animal phylum in the world, only ranking behind arthropods. But in terms of morphological diversity or disparity, mollusks far outstrip arthropods. Of their seven classes, gastropods (snails and slugs), bivalves (clams and oysters) and cephalopods (octopus, squids and cuttlefish) are of global economic importance as a source of food. Mollusks' body design, shell-making mechanism, feeding methods, locomotion, self-defense, sex and reproduction are extremely interesting and mind-boggling. Last but not least, many of their shells' colorful and delicate appearances managed to capture a large number of collectors for years and are demanding high prices.
