Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series
Traveling to world’s ancient countries through talks and rich collections of pictures
AZORES by Mr. Vincent WONG
As an autonomous region of Portugal, the Azores is an archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,400 km from Lisbon. Located at the "triple junction" of three major tectonic plates, its geology is very interesting with Mount Pico being an active volcano and the highest mountain in Portugal. The islands have many endemic plants and animals and are unusually green with many beautiful trekking routes. The culture, dialect, cuisines and tradition of the islands also vary considerably and are most colourful due to their remoteness and being settled sporadically within two centuries. That it once served as a whaling centre and a base for maritime exploration added much colour to its history. Because of ocean influence, the temperature is mild all the year round. All the above make it an attractive destination for travellers.
Testimonials from participants of previous travel talks and study tours led by Vincent:
“I have learnt a lot on this subject!”
“Very comprehensive indeed. Thanks!”
“Very useful guide for my future trip!”
”Now what I have seen makes much more sense. Thank you!”
