NEWS FROM THE AA BAR
Message from the A A Bar :
Dear HKUAA Members,
New Wine Menu
I am happy to announce the unveiling of our new wine menu which has now included some very good as well as good value wines. As attached below for your easy reference, you will notice the popular 2013 Pontet Canet has been replaced by the spectacular 2010 Second Growth Leoville-Poyferre with a whopping score of 98 from Parker ! There is also the good value 2005 Quinalt l'Enclos of RP 94 score, which some of us tried at the Wine Dinner in January and found it very pleasing. For white wine lovers, I have acquired a good value Margaret River Chardonnay which has a score of 93 from J Halliday, replacing the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which have sold out.
Wine Dinner
Our first Wine Dinner this year on 29 January was again over-subscribed, despite the increase in price. Participants enjoyed all the five high score red Bordeaux and some lucky ones went away with a bottle of the wines offered for sale at cost after the dinner. A lot of happy participants asked when would be the next Wine Dinner and refused to accept my indication that it might be five months away. So on popular request, I am considering the next one to be held some time three months away, although they wanted it before Easter ! But on a happy note, I told the supportive participants that there would be a RP 98 Bordeaux next time ! So please watch out for our notice. I anticipate to hold three wine dinners this year !
The Fine Wine Club
I am happy to report that, despite the increase in subscription price, we now have more members than last year ! To reciprocate members' good support, we will hold our first free tasting in March. And as usual, you will taste wines of at least RP 90 score, and there may be some offered for sale at cost. If you can do some simple calculation, you will find out being a member of the club is of super value for the benefits you will enjoy. The earlier you sign up, the more benefit you will enjoy. So please do it now !
I am trying hard to find some good value wines for subscription, taking advantage of the current drop in European currency value.
In the meantime I wish you all a very happy, prosperous and trouble free Year of the Ram, and best of health !
Yours sincerely,
Tommy Ling

Dear all,
We had a very successful wine tasting at the AA Bar last Friday (December 12, 2014) attended by some 30 members and guests. A total of 5 brands of wines were served including a Bordeaux 2nd growth. Practically all participants praised all the wines most of which have RP 90 and more ratings. The highlight of the tasting was the unveiling of the last 'Mystery Wine' - the 1997 Pichon Lalande and everybody was rushing forward to try it. But I was the one really surprised by the response ! Most participants loved this wine and considered it the best wine of the evening, even though according to Parker, it has passed its prime and only managed 88 points from the the Emporer of Wine ! I now need to reconsider Parker's ratings !
The tasting ended with another happy note - the participants were allowed to purchase three kinds of wines tasted, two French and one Spanish (RP 94), at cost and they were all less than $200 a bottle. 60 bottles were snatched up at no time ! You simply cannot buy them this cheap anywhere in Hong Kong. Those didn't get any and are curious to try, please come to the bar or simply order them at meals as they will be available after Christmas, albeit at a small premium of course.
Now I would like to rally your support for the Fine Wine Club as year 2014 is drawing to a close. Members please renew your membership and others please join us. There will be a slight increase of fee as we are trying hard to break even. For $200 a year you get at least two free tastings, subscription to wines of super value and 10% discount to Wine Dinners. This year we had two free tastings, two subscriptions and one Wine Dinner. Next Year there will be at least two with one coming up in January.
Fine Wine Club Membership fee : $200 per person (Valid from January 1 to December 31, 2015)
