Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series
Traveling to world’s ancient countries through talks and rich collections of pictures
CHILE by Mr. Vincent WONG
Located along the West coast of South America, Chile is the longest and southern-most country in the world. It possesses as many as 11 climatic zones, varying from Desert to Mediterranean, Temperate, Tundra, Subtropical and even Polar. The country is extremely scenic, covering almost the entire length of the Andes, which includes 500 active volcanoes as well as the Atacama Desert, the Lake District and Patagonia's high peaks and glaciers, not to mention the mysterious Easter Island. Adding on top, the country has 5,100 species of flora and fauna, of which 2,500 are endemic, including the llama, alpaca, rhea and condor. The country is also rich in mineral resources and important producers of seafood, fruit and wine. Its history is very interesting too, starting with the Incas rule then the Spanish colonization, Mapuche's resistance and independence in 1818, followed by wars with neighboring countries, dictatorship to democratization. All these make Chile a popular tourist destination.
