Summary:

Hong Kong has more than 60 museums today and the first museum in the city can be dated back to the 1840s. However, do you know that Hong Kong did not have a single museum for almost 20 years? HKUAA Green and Culture Group is honoured to invite Mr. Reynold Tsang to trace and discuss the twists and turns of Hong Kong's museum development in the second half of the twentieth century. We will follow how the Hong Kong government and the local community re-establish and expand museum services after the closure of the Old City Hall Museum in 1933 up until the "museum boom" in the 1980s and 1990s.

Reynold Tsang is a DPhil student in History at the University of Oxford. He received his BA and MPhil (History) from the University of Hong Kong. His MPhil thesis looks at the development of museums in late colonial Hong Kong and his current project examines the history of museums in East and Southeast Asia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Reynold is an awardee of the Swire Scholarship, which fully funded his DPhil study.

Welcome all HKU alumni and students to bring your family and friends to join.
